Not just Barcelona is worth a visit
When it is about city trips in spain the focus is mainly on Barcelona. Undeniable, this is a beautiful city as I already showed you for example here. However, about trips to Madrid I haven’t heard so much before. When I got the opportunity in October to visit the city for a long weekend, I was really excited – the capital of a city has to offer something. Really “oldschool” I bought a travel guide. Yes, you hear right, a book. In times of Pinterest and Instagram many may see it as a relict of the past but from now and then I love to hold something printed and organized in my hands.
Since I already visited Lisbon at the beginning of 2018 and Barcelona in 2017 and I really liked these places (the magic of the narrow alleys and the ancient Iberian town houses can just understand who was there in person), it was no surprise that I really enjoyed my time in Madrid as well. Which five highlights – my Must-Do’s in Madrid, I can recommend you the most for your trip, you can read here:
Retiro Park & Palacio de Cristal
The first day of my trip I had incredibly luck with the weather at the end of October: 25 degrees Celsius and bright sunshine. The perfect day for visiting the most famous park of the city. The Retiro park is considered to be one of the most beatiful parks in Europe. The highlight of this place is definitely the Cristal Palace. To my big disappointment it was this very day of all days closed for the installation of an art exhibition. So I had to content myself with taking photos in front of the Palacio de Cristal – nevertheless the photos turned out really good in my opinion.
Many exhibitions for art lovers
Talking about art exhibitions: For art and architecture lovers Madrid has a lot to offer. For example I just visited the CentroCentro in the Palacio de Cibeles because the building is so pretty from the inside but there was also the complimentary exhibition of modern installation art.
Madrid is also home of world-famous art museums: the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Since I was in Madrid for just a long weekend and my time was limited I just visited the latter. Back in Barcelona I found the Picasso museum interesting and really wanted to see one of his masterpieces, the anti war painting “Guernica”. All in all, the pictures you can admire in Reina Sofía are an artful collection of war’s terrors. I often wish more people would visit such exhibitions so that these atrocities will never be forgotten.
Next time I visit Madrid (I really hope that there will be a next time soon!) I’m definitely going to the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza which is an exquisit private collection that contains the most famous names of the art scene. Did I mention that I originally wanted to study art history?
An unusual train station
At first glance the train station of Atocha looks like a botanical garden. The huge hall from the 18th century contains a palm garden with turtles. Restaurants make it even nicer to stay there a little while longer. Unfortunately I could not discover any turtles, maybe you’ll have more luck!
Palacio Real: The domicile of the monarchy
Unfortunately, I did not see the impressive royal palace from the inside because I did not want to waste too much time waiting in the incredibly long line. For the public there are ancient weapons, art objects and representative rooms such as the throne and the dining room presented. I was told a little later that the collection is really worth seeing which made me regret my impatience at the entrance. By the way, the royal family of Felipe VI is not living at this place anymore but in Palacio de Zarzuelo north-west of Madrid.
The Spanish market halls
In Barcelona I’ve visited a Spanish market hall for the first time and was amazed. They are a culinary adventure trip, I could not get enough of the dealer’s fresh displays. At the same time the prices are absolutely fair no comparison to something that is the most similar in Germany – the Viktualienmarkt in Munich. So if you are in need of a snack in between two sightseeing locations – a city trip can be quite exhausting – look for a market hall. I got a delicious fresh smoothie in Madrid’s most famous one, the Mercado San Miguel.
The beauty of the Iberian peninsula
Looking back at my short weeknd trips to the Iberian peninsula I think that I really have to plan another this year! I just love the food and the relaxed outdoor lifestyle. Also the view of these narrow alleys in the city centers with the antique facades is something I miss here in Germany. Do you have recommendations for cities worth visiting in Spain and Portugal?

Nicht nur Barcelona ist eine Reise Wert
Wenn es um Städtereisen nach Spanien geht, liegt der Fokus meist auf Barcelona. Eine unbestreitbar wunderschöne Stadt. Über Trips nach Madrid hatte ich stattdessen noch nicht so sehr viel gehört. Als ich im Oktober dann die Gelegenheit bekam die Stadt für ein verlängertes Wochenende zu besuchen, habe ich mich trotzdem sehr gefreut – eine europäische Hauptstadt muss ja schließlich etwas zu bieten haben. Ganz “oldschool” informiere ich mich vor einer Reise übrigens meistens auch noch mittels Reiseführer. In Zeiten von Pinterest und Instagram für viele vielleicht ein Relikt aus der Vergangenheit, liebe ich es hin und wieder etwas Gedrucktes und Durchstrukturiertes in der Hand zu halten.
Da ich bereits Anfang des Jahres Lissabon und 2017 Barcelona bereist hatte und ich beide Städte sehr in mein Herz geschlossen habe (diesen ganz besonderen Charme der engen Gassen und alten iberischen Stadthäuser kann glaube ich nur verstehen, wer dort war), war es dann natürlich kein Wunder, dass mir auch Madrid sehr gefallen hat. Welche fünf Highlights ich euch ganz besonders ans Herz legen kann, lest ihr hier:
Retiro Park & Palacio de Cristal
Am ersten Tag meiner Reise hatte ich Ende Oktober noch wahnsinniges Glück mit dem Wetter: 25 Grad und strahlender Sonnenschein. Die perfekte Gelegenheit also den berühmtesten Park der Stadt zu besuchen. Der Retiro Park gilt zurecht als einer der schönsten Parks Europas. Das Highlight ist dabei definitiv der Kristallpalast. Zu meiner großen Enttäuschung war er ausgerechnet in der Zeit meines Besuches für die Installation einer Kunstausstellung geschlossen. So musste ich mich mit Fotos davor begnügen – die meiner Meinung nach aber auch sehr schön geworden sind.
Zahlreiche Ausstellungen für Kunstliebhaber
Wenn wir schon dabei sind, über Kunst zu sprechen: Für Kunst- und Architekturliebhaber bietet Madrid mehrere Highlights. So habe ich das CentroCentro im Palacio de Cibeles eigentlich nur besucht, weil das Gebäude von innen so wunderschön gestaltet ist und bin direkt in eine (kostenlose) Ausstellung moderner Installationskunst gelaufen.
Doch am berühmtesten sind sich das Museo Nacional del Prado und das Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Da ich nur über ein langes Wochenende in Madrid und meine Zeit damit begrenzt war, habe ich nur letzteres besucht. Bereits in Barcelona hat mir das Picasso Museum sehr gut gefallen und ich wollte unbedingt sein weltberühmtes Antikriegsbild “Guernica” sehen. Insgesamt fasst die Kunst im Reina Sofía die Schrecken der Weltkriege eindrucksvoll zusammen. Ich wünschte häufig, mehr Menschen würden solche Kunstaustellungen besuchen, da solche Gräueltaten nie vergessen werden sollten!
Wenn ich Madrid das nächste Mal besuche, werde ich definitiv das Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza besuchen, eine exquisite Privatsammlung der berühmtesten Namen der Kunstszene. Hatte ich schon erwähnt, dass ich eigentlich gerne Kunstgeschichte studiert hätte?
Ein ungewöhnlicher Bahnhof
Der Bahnhof Atocha lässt zuerst einen botanischen Garten vermuten. In dem Gebäude aus dem 18. Jahrhundert ist ein riesiger Palmengarten mit Schildkröten untergebracht, außerdem laden Restaurants zum Verweilen ein. Leider konnte ich keine Schildkröten entdecken, vielleicht habt ihr ja mehr Glück!
Palacio Real: Der Sitz der Monarchie
Leider habe ich den eindrucksvollen Königspalast nicht von innen gesehen, da mich die lange Schlange abgeschreckt hat. Präsentiert werden der Öffentlchkeit dort alte Waffen, Rüstungen, Kunstgegenstände und repräsentative Räumlichkeiten wie der Thron- und der Speisesaal. Mir wurde im Nachhinein erzählt, dass die Sammlung sehr sehenswert ist, was mich meine Ungeduld vor dem Eingang etwas bereuen lies. Übrigens wohnt die aktuelle Königsfamilie von Felipe VI nicht mehr in diesem Palast, sondern im Nordwesten Madrids auf dem Gelände des Palacio de Zarzuela.
Die spanischen Markthallen
Bereits in Barcelona habe ich die spanischen Markthallen kennen- und lieben gelernt. Sie sind jedes Mal auf’s Neue wieder eine kulinarische Erlebnisreise, ich konnte mich nicht sattsehen an den frischen Auslagen der Händler. Gleichzeitig sind die Preise absolut human, kein Vergleich zu vielleicht dem, was den Markthallen in Deutschland am Nähesten kommt, dem Viktualienmarkt in München. Wenn ihr also auf der Suche nach frischen Snacks für zwischendurch seid, so ein Städtetrip ist ja immer auch anstrengend, plant unbedingt eine Markthalle ein. Ich habe mich in der größten Madrids, dem Mercado San Miguel, erstmal mit einem frischen Smoothie versorgt.
Die Schönheit der iberischen Halbinsel
Wenn ich meine Wochenendtrips auf die iberische Halbinsel so Revue passieren lasse, kommt mir der Gedanke, dass ich unbedingt noch einen für 2019 einplanen sollte. Ich liebe das Essen und die entspannten “Outdoor”-Lebensweise. Außerdem sind die engen Gassen in den Innenstädten mit den antiken Häuserfassaden ein Anblick, den ich in Deutschland vermisse. Oh ja, Madrid ist wirklich so eine schöne Stadt! Leider konnte ich damals nicht in den Retiro Park, weil er wegen Arbeiten geschlossen war. Das muss ich aber eindeutig nachholen, deine Bilder machen mir wirklich Total Lust darauf, meine Koffer zu packen! 🙂
