Why thekontemporary.com?
Why did I name my blog “thekontemporary.com”? I think, I have never explained the reasons behind this name and always took for granted that everyone would understand I want to say with it. When i founded my blog I still worked for a German fashion retail chain. There was a departmend with the name “Contemporary”. Contemporary fashion describes high fashion designer clothes made by young, innovative and reasonably priced labels. Since this is my favorite kind of fashion and the word “contemporary” itself means as much as “modern” it was clear for me: TheKontemporary. Written with “K” like my first name and because the domain with “C” was obviously already taken.
TheKontemporary.com is meant to tell the story of a modern young women and cover topics that are relevant for people my age, above all fashion of course. But fashion is not the only topic of my blog. For example in my Monday column “Monday Musings” (next week I’m publishing the next edition, I promise!) I’m talking about everything that is running through my mind.
Why now the Instagram Name Change?
When I started to pursue Instagram in a more professional way it only seemed logical to me to create an account with the same name. Keywords recognition value, branding etc. However, somehow I haven’t been happy with my choice for a long time. I could not identify with this name anymore. It seemed too unpersonal and complicated to me. For Germans thekontemporary is pretty complicated to write and say. Additionally most people not in the fashion or art industry do not know what the word “contemporary” means.
At the same time I’m observing the trend that many influencers change their Instagram names to more “real”, person-related names. So for example, Stephanie from the fashionblog veja-du.de changed her Instagram name to her real name stephanievanklev and just some days ago Verena changed her blog and Instagram name from somehappyshoes to enachrist. Even uber blogger Chiara Ferragni uses her real name on Instagram instead of her blog’s name theblondesalad. I can understand this development. After all on Instagram (more than on a blog) it’s all about personality and the person behind. – And this gets clear with a name you can identify with, a name you suspect a person behind and not something anonymous, indefinable.
To use my real name completely was not a choice for me. It is simply too long and incredibly difficult to spell (when I was living in the US 50% of the attempts to spell it over the phone failed and I had to write an e-mail afterwards). So I played around with my first name a little. Apart from the new name I also work on creating my account a little more personal and give you some exclusive additional content you don’t find on the blog. I also try to give InstaStory more attention, creating new highlights was the first step.

Warum thekontemporary.com?
Warum heißt mein Blog eigentlich “thekontemporary.com”? Ich glaube, ich habe es nie wirklich erklärt und es immer für selbstverständlich genommen, dass dieser Name für jeden nachvollziehbar ist. Als ich den Blog gegründet habe, habe ich noch im Verkauf einer großen Modekette gearbeitet. Dort gab es eine Abteilung mit dem Namen “Contemporary”. Contemporary Fashion bezeichnet hochmodische Designermode, von jungen, innovativen und noch (einigermaßen) bezahlbaren Labels. Da dies meine Lieblingsmode war und das Wort “contemporary” übersetzt gleichzeitig so viel wie “modern” und “zeitgemäß” bedeutet, war es für mich klar: TheKontemporary. Geschrieben mit K wie mein Vorname und weil die Domain mit “C” natürlich schon vergeben war.
TheKontemporary.com soll von dem Leben einer modernen jungen Frau erzählen und gleichzeitig Themen aufgreifen, die in diesem Zusammenhang relevant sind, allen voran natürlich Mode. Doch Mode soll nicht das einzige Thema sein. In meiner montäglichen Kolumne “Monday Musings” (nächste Woche kommt wieder eine Ausgabe, versprochen) geht es um alles Mögliche, was mich und die Welt gerade beschäftigt.
Warum jetzt anders auf Instagram?
Als ich anfing mich etwas professioneller mit Instagram auseinanderzusetzen, schien es nur logisch, dass ich einen Account mit dem gleichen Namen erstelle. Stichwort Wiedererkennungswert, Branding etc. Doch irgendwie konnte ich mich schon länger nicht mehr mit diesem Namen für Instagram wirklich identifizieren. Zu unpersönlich und zu kompliziert erschien er mir. Für Deutsche ist er schließlich recht schwierig zu schreiben und auszusprechen. Dazu kommt, dass die meisten außerdem der Mode- oder Kunstbranche mit dem Wort “contemporary” nicht wirklich etwas anfangen können.
Gleichzeitig beobachte ich gerade auch bei anderen den Trend, ihren Instagram-Namen zu ändern und persönlicher zu gestalten. So heißt Stephanie vom Modeblog veja-du.de auf Instagram jetzt stephanievanklev und erst vor kurzem hat Verena sowohl ihren Blog- als auch ihren Instagramnamen von somehappyshoes auf enachrist geändert. Auch Überbloggern Chiara Ferragni benutzt auf Instagram ihren eigenen Namen statt den ihres Blogs theblondesalad. Ich kann diese Entwicklung gut verstehen, denn schließlich geht es auf Instagram, viel mehr als auf einem Blog, um Persönlichkeit und die Person dahinter. – Und die wird schließlich auch durch einen Namen verdeutlicht, hinter dem man eine Person vermutet und nicht etwas Anonymes, Undefinierbares.
Komplett meinen echten Namen wollte ich nicht verwenden, hauptsächlich weil er sehr lang und unfassbar schwierig zu buchstabieren ist (in den USA musste ich meist eine E-Mail schreiben, da es telefonisch in 50% der Versuche nicht geklappt hat). Also habe ich ein wenig mit meinem Vornamen gespielt. Abgesehen von dem neuen Namen arbeite ich nun daran, auch den Inhalt meines Accounts persönlicher zu gestalten und euch noch mehr Zusatzcontent zu liefern, den es exklusiv auf Instagram zu finden gibt. Auch InstaStorys erhalten in diesem Zusammenhang mehr Beachtung von mir, mit neuen Highlights habe ich bereits angefangen.

For me, it was always important that the name was identified with the face of a particular person. It’s nice when the name appears in the name. I thought for a very long time how to name my blog and account on Instagram, it was the same, but in some time I do not know what ideas I will have. Anyway, I love watching your Instagram account, especially for beautiful photos.

Mir ist die Entwicklung auf Instagram auch aufgefallen. Ich hatte auch mal überlegt bei Instagram auf meinen Blognamen zu verzichten, aber habe es am Ende gelassen. In erster Linie wegen den Branding und Wiedererkennungswert. Aber vielleicht ändert sich meine Meinung darüber ja nochmal.
